News and Activities of the social justice group at The Bath Church United Church of Christ, Akron, Ohio
The mission of the Micah 6:8 group is to raise awareness of the need to be good stewards of all that God has provided and to work towards the goal of equal opportunity and justice for all people.
Great Idea!
ReplyDeleteLast Tuesday,as I was returning from the 350th Anniversary of a church I served long ago in the U.S. Virgin Islands, The Akron Area Inter faith Council,AAIC of which I am a board member, held a special closed meeting where it was decided to substitute the CROP Walk with a walk only for local Akron need. Coincidently that was the very day of the Haitian disaster.
Since returning I have been petioning the AAIC to reconsider its move. The timing of their decision is stunning. I have offered various alternatives but have been ignored by the leaders of AAIC.
The pain of this situation is multiplied by the fact that now is an opportunity to unite all faiths in a tangible demonstration of sharing with a predominatly Black population suffering at our doorstep. The AAIC often bemoans the fact that Afican American churches are not active in the council.
We can contribute directly to Haiti relief via the UCC website, and I'll bet there's a special call for donations tomorrow. Keep us posted on the CROP walk developments.
